Avoid Chainsaw Kickback by Paying Careful Attention When Operating Chainsaws.

Many homeowners will be taking to the woods or even their backyards this fall to cut a supply of firewood. Power chainsaws are a great labor-saving tool for wood cutting, but they are also dangerous.

According to Dennis Adams, Nebraska State Forester, saw kickback is a major cause of serious injury. Kickback is caused when the saw teeth catch anc kick the saw back suddenly and with violent force. Human reactions are not quick enough to stop kickback momentum. Often, the operator loses his grip on the saw, and severe cuts result to the head, shoulders or legs.

Kickback can be prevented by always paying careful attention to what is being cut and what is behind or under it. Have a good, firm grip on the saw at all times. A dull or loose chain also can cause kickback, so keep the saw sharp and properly adjusted.
