Potassium Is An Important Nutrient for the Body

Potassium is an important nutrient that plays a big part in muscle contraction. According to Wanda Koszewski, UNL Extension nutrition specialist, while potassium deficiency rarely is a problem, most people do not consume enough potassium in their daily diets. The Institute of Medicine recommends 4,700 milligrams of potassium daily for adults.

About 90 percent of people do not get enough potassium in their diets. To get more potassium in the diet, eat fresher foods, such as fruits and vegetables, milk and other dairy products. Avoid processed foods.

To get in more potassium, enjoy fruits such as bananas, oranges, peaches, plums or apricots for snacks. Substitute a baked potato for potato chips or fries, or drink milk instead of pop with a meal.

Potassium supplements generally are not recommended unless under medical supervision. Too much potassium in the diet can be as dangerous as too little.
