Tree and Lawn Problems Starting to Appear
Homeowners are advised to inspect their pine trees for signs of disease. I have seen some needle blight showing up in pine trees this spring.
Austrian and ponderosa pines are more susceptible to the disease. The needles turn brown at the tip first and then the entire needle turns brown. An identifying feature is dark spots or bands on the needles. Older interior needles are affected more than younger outer needles. The disease tends to start at the bottom of the tree.
Control measures include spraying the trees with a fungicide as needles are emerging (mid May) and after new growth has occurred (mid to late June). Increasing the air flow around the trees is recommended.
Winter damage on trees and lawns is more prevalent this year. The damage in lawns is showing up as thin areas and leaves may have a purple color. Tip die back on twigs and young branches is a common symptom in trees.
