Extension Corner - 4-H Volunteers

As the 4-H season starts, and kids decide what projects to bring to the county, state, and national level. they may need some assistance in developing their skills to complete the projects. We call these individuals “ volunteers”.

Volunteers are individuals who help benefit the local community and develop 4-H project ideas so that kids may thrive throughout the year. These individuals may have interests in cooking, woodworking or livestock showmanship. In some cases, volunteers may put on demonstrations or workshops to develop the skills needed to complete projects that the kids are going to bring to the fair.

At the county level, there are a variety of 4-H volunteers ranging from a one-time commitment to a longer period of time. Volunteers pick the experiences that best meet the needs, schedules and interest of the community. By affiliating with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 4-H is able to provide its volunteers with quality, research-based teaching materials to use with club members. The Extension Office staff is also available to assist volunteers and match them with experienced leaders in the community.

Throughout the state, 4-H volunteers keep coming back year after year to see how the kids of 4-H strive to become better individuals within their own community. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension surveyed several people at State Fair, and studies show that children benefit from interaction with caring adult role models in addition to their parents. 4-H volunteers are forming the lives of our community leaders and making a positive atmosphere for children.

So, if you are interested in helping 4-H kids with their projects or developing skills to make better people of the community, contact your local Extension office for more information to become a volunteer.
