Summer Tours in the Country Scheduled for July

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in Washington County will be sponsoring the Summer Tours in the Country beginning in July. The tours will be held on the Tuesday evenings of July 8, July 15 and July 22. All the tours begin at 7 p.m. The tours will highlight alternative agriculture enterprises and unique horticulture landscapes of Washington County.

The first tour will be July 8 at the Dave Genoways home in Fort Calhoun. Dave Genoways will discuss his outstanding display of roses and rose care and management. He has over 200 roses in his landscape. The second tour on July 15 will be at the Mike and Chris Stork farm north of Arlington. The Storks have added a meat goat enterprise to their dairy and farming operation. Another enterprise is the growing of woody florals for sale. The final tour will be on July 22 at the Beth and Scott Davis acreage northwest of Blair. This tour will focus on heirloom tomatoes, organic production practices and using the community supported agriculture marketing approach for selling produce. Beth has 100 varieties of heirloom tomatoes in addition to an extensive range of vegetables for her community supported agriculture shareholders and for sale at farmers’ markets.

The tours are free and interested persons are invited to contact the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Washington County Office at 426-9455 or email washington-county@unl.edu for more tour information.
